Thank you for downloading 'The Permutation Files'. Unless you changed the settings, the files will all be in a folder called:

C:\permute

In addition to the permutation files, you'll also find three image files of the dreamachine (file dream3.jpg makes the best desktop background).

I've included plain text and Word versions of the permutation files. You can use either, but you will need a find/replace function which isn't available on older versions of Notepad. All files were checked for viruses before uploading to the site, but please feel free to run them through a virus checker. You know it makes sense.

Files included are:
perm3.txt
perm3.doc
perm4.txt
perm4.doc
perm5.txt
perm5.doc
perm6.txt
perm6.doc
dream1.jpg
dream2.jpg
dream3.jpg
readme.txt

The permutation files:

As you'll see, they are simply text files set up with numerical permutations for phrases of 3, 4, 5 or 6 words. They are designed to allow you to create symetrical permutations of phrases containing between three and six words. The grids for all the permutations were generated manually.

The basic scheme is:

1234	1243 1342 1324 1423 1432

The next line would begin: 2341, and so forth.

All that is happening is that (working from the right) the final 2 digits are transposed (1234 becomes 1243), then the final 3 digits are flipped over as a block (1243 becomes 1342) (with the last two digits then being rotated in turn so that 1342 becomes 1324). This pattern is repeated until all the 3-digit options are completed. Then all four digits are tranposed (so that 1432 becomes 2341). Note the mirroring at the end of each sequence. The last permutation of the series is always an exact reversal of the first. Don't worry if you've missed the point here. The files do most of the work for you!

How to use the files:

1) Make a copy of the basic files before you start. You will be modifying the files as you create permutations, so you will want to be able to access the originals. My tip is to always rename the file before you start work.

2) Open your working copy of the file called perm3.txt or perm3.doc. You'll see something like this (I've put breaks in this example so that you can see the structure more easily):

1 2 3
1 3 2

2 3 1
2 1 3

3 1 2
3 2 1

3) Pick any three word phrase (for this example), such as 'Everything Is Permuted'. I suggest you always capitalize the first letter of each word as the results are easier to follow).

4) Using the find/replace function - usually found under the 'Edit' drop-down menu - set the software to Find '1' and to replace it with 'Everything'. You don't need to include the 'quote' marks. Tell the package to 'replace all'. The text will change to:

Everything 2 3
Everything 3 2

2 3 Everything
2 Everything 3

3 Everything 2
3 2 Everything

Now replace '2' with 'Is'

Everything Is 3
Everything 3 Is

Is 3 Everything
Is Everything 3

3 Everything Is
3 Is Everything

Now replace '3' with 'Permuted'

Everything Is Permuted
Everything Permuted Is

Is Permuted Everything
Is Everything Permuted

Permuted Everything Is
Permuted Is Everything

You now have a full permutation of the three-word phrase 'Everything Is Permuted'.

4) Save the file using the 'Save As' command, making sure you give the file a new name.

5) If the example looks simple, consider this:

3 digit permutations provide 6 rotations
4 digit permutations provide 24 rotations
5 digit permutations provide 120 rotations
6 digit permutations provide 720 rotations

7 digits would give 5040 rotations (file not included!)

I have included single spacing between the numbers to ease reading. By the way, if you look at the permutation of 'Nothing is True Everything is Permitted' on www.paulcecil.com/nothing.htm you might notice that although there are 6 words in the phrase, there are only 360 permutations (rather than 720). This is because the word 'is' appears twice. I manually removed the duplicate lines.
